Assistance in natural disasters
Piraeus Bank has made it a priority to supporting local communities affected by natural disasters, recognising its crucial role in ensuring the sustainability and resilience of the environment. With an emphasis on social responsibility and support for those affected, the Bank implements relief programmes aimed at supporting residents and businesses damaged by natural disasters and actively contributes to the restoration of the natural landscapes affected. These actions reflect Piraeus Bank’s commitment to environmental and social well-being, enhancing the resilience of areas facing the impacts of climate change.
More specifically, in support of the areas of North Evia affected by the devastating fires, Piraeus Bank carried out actions for the pupils of Primary and Secondary Education and students of these areas, offering scholarships and equipment in an effort to assist in the reconstruction and development of North Evia.
Piraeus Bank participated in the restoration of Parnitha from the catastrophic fire of August 2023, financing the study and implementation of erosion and flood control works in an area of 9,000,000 square metres (9,000 stremmata) by contracting the work to forestry cooperatives. This action is being implemented in cooperation with the General Directorate of Forests and Forest Environment of the Ministry of the Environment and Energy, which has selected Piraeus Bank as the Restoration and Reforestation Contractor for the Parnitha area.
In Evros, where the fires left behind extensive damage to the natural and economic environment, Piraeus Bank offered around 20 tonnes of bee feed to affected beekeepers in Soufli. The Bank has been on the side of farmers and ranchers who suffered losses from the very first moment. Its initiative came at a critical time – without provision of feed, there would have been a risk to the bee population, honey production and, in general, the regeneration of the local ecosystem. Furthermore, in cooperation with the Democritus University of Thrace, it is leading the regeneration of the Soufli Beekeeping Park, which was completely destroyed by the fires.
Responding to the need to rebuild and upgrade the infrastructure in the affected areas of Thessaly after the disastrous floods of 2023, Piraeus Bank participated in the initiative of the Hellenic Bank Association, co-financing the preparation of a study aimed at the complete modernisation of the irrigation network and the flood protection of the Thessalian plain. In addition, the Bank carried out other actions to support the residents of Thessaly, such as the provision of school supplies and basic necessities, as well as measures to relieve them of their loan obligations (e.g. freezing of instalments until the end of the year, etc.), which acted as a bridge until households and businesses return to normal.
Piraeus Bank supports the restoration of Penteli, where residents suffered great losses in natural wealth and infrastructure in the fire of 2024. It immediately announced relief measures for affected customers and then participated in the restoration of Penteli, financing the study and implementation of erosion control and flood protection projects by again contracting the work to forestry cooperatives. This action is being implemented in cooperation with the General Directorate of Forests and Forest Environment of the Ministry of the Environment and Energy, which has selected Piraeus Bank as the Restoration and Reforestation Contractor for the Penteli area.
These relief actions reflect Piraeus Bank’s vision for a sustainable and resilient environment, pursuing environmental reconstruction and supporting local communities at every stage of restoration.
